Exactly one year ago the Seychelles Heritage Foundation and Raffles Praslin Seychelles launched the first ‘Raffles Seychelles Heritage Award’ as a mean to engage more our children and youth in the preservation, conservation and promotion of our heritage. In the process, they also happen to learn a lot and develop their personal skills and knowledge.
This award will be held annually and it would be open to participation from both state and private schools who are members of the heritage club. The theme chosen for the 2012-2013 Award was: “Travay dir pour preserv nou leritaz”.

Out of five schools from Praslin and La Digue, three schools presented their projects. Praslin Secondary presented their projects on ‘The abandon Cemetery on Praslin’. The students carried out various site visits to the abundant cemetery; they shared stories about witchcrafts that people associate with the burial sites.

La Digue School’s project was about the ‘History of Old Traditional Houses on La Digue’. The students outlined the main features of a traditional house, they conducted a survey on the number of traditional houses left on La Digue and how many of students from their school live in a traditional house. They talked about the threats traditional houses are facing and also came up with some recommendations on how to preserve these traditional houses.

Last but not least Vijay International School’s Project was about ‘Traditional Houses and Furniture’. The students did various drawing to illustrate their findings. They visited a lot of places and houses having traditional furniture’s. It is important to note that they participated with the youngest members.

First prize went to La Digue School and it was Mr. Simon Hirst the General Manager of Raffles Praslin Seychelles along with Mr. Patrick Nanty the CEO of Seychelles Heritage Foundation (SHF) who presented the prizes to the three schools.
The new theme for the 2013-2014 Award was launched by the CEO of SHF which is ‘FRAMING OUR HERITAGE’ whereby all schools in Seychelles having a heritage club can participate by either DRAWING or taking a PHOTOGRAPH of any build in Heritage. Some proposed topics are traditional houses, traditional furniture and/or traditional craftsmen.

In his address Mr. Hirst pledged his engagement to continue supporting the Award as it creates a platform to encourage school students to openly discuss and promote the Seychelles Heritage. Once again the Management and Staff of the Seychelles Heritage Foundation   would like to thank Raffles Praslin Seychelles for supporting the young school children to become more involved in and more aware of the importance of conserving and promoting our cultural heritage. By supporting this project they are helping children to also play their part in developing our heritage or cultural tourism industry.
